Courtesy of the colossal Captain Obvious blog, Ryan Adams' magnificent cover of The White Stripes' seminal 'White Blood Cells' track finds its way on to FDM.com. Of Adams' many cover versions this remains one of his best. A slowed-down lump of garage-rock infused with melancholy drawn from the heart of new-school Americana. Better than the original? Pretty much. www.thankscaptainobvious.net

Rilo Kiley's all-American country-idol Jenny Lewis continues on her path to cult superstardom. The title-track from her impressive new album, 'Acid Tongue' is a melodic slice of infectious Americana that finds Lewis in bristling form. Hints of Loretta Lynn sweeten the pudding but it is Lewis’ lilting voice and way with throw-away lyrical couplets that really steals the show. www.jennylewis.com

Part of a four-track covers EP from New York retro-types French Kicks, 'Trouble' is a rather impressive re-tracing of Lindsey Buckingham's classic first hit from his 1981 debut solo album 'Law And Order'. The 'Covers' Ep also finds the NYC quartet putting their mark on The Zombies, The Shirelles and The Ramones to pretty impressive effect. www.frenchkicks.com

Gorgeous moment of minimalist Americana from Portland, Oregon sextet Horse Feathers. Whispered vocals, picked guitars and haunting string parts are wonderfully restrained on this teaser from their forthcoming second album; Think of a fledgling Calexico with emotions to burn. www.killrockstars.com

Recorded live at a recent show in Boston, 'Cobwebs' is the first fruits of Adams' recent work with The Cardinals. Excellent mid-paced fare that sounds like a natural extension of a couple of tracks from 'Easy Tiger' it's suitably epic and seems to go down an absolute treat with the Boston masses. Stereogum.com has a few more new live tracks available for free download. www.ryan-adams.com

A teaser from their forthcoming new LP 'Motion To Rejoin', 'Oppressions Each' is classic Brightblack Morning Light. Distorted reverb, vocals as light as a feather and a keyboard-part so lethargic it'd struggle to get out of bed in the morning. The sound of a band living out a brilliant daydream. www.thebrightblackmorninglight.com

Carving out a very fine line in lush, ambient folk, Newcastle, England’s finest Lanterns On The Lake offer up an extremely impressive introduction to their offbeat and spectral sound In the form of ‘If I Have Been Unkind’. With nods towards The Album Leaf and Arcade Fire, theirs is a noise big on melodies and all things epic. www.myspace.com/lanternsonthelake

With her gentle, unhurried sound and eccentric coo, Meredith Godreau has already seen comparisons drawn to luminaries Jenny Lewis and Joanna Newsom. 'Grey Weather' endorses these comparisons no-end and, despite baring a rather uncanny resemblance to Lisa Loeb's '94 hit 'Stay', 'Grey Weather' finds great form as a short, sprightly slice of off-beat acoustica. www.gregoryandthehawk.com
